I recently started a new project for a Lowrider car to be showcased at the Super Show in Las Vegas. Here are some images of what I'm painting on the side of it.
The owner wants me to paint a Mexican Revolution theme so I did these three beauties, I'm also going to paint a derrailed train and some soldiers on horseback riding around. I will try to post images of the rest of the car as I progress. Enjoy,

I have to paint these on a Lowrider but I decided to do a pencil outline on photoshop, and as I worked more and more on it, I liked the result so I decided to add a little color and a little more detail to it.

Magnum Interior

After weeks and weeks of working on a lot of different projects I finally have some time to post some new pictures. These pieces are from the interior of a Dodge Magnum, The Artwork is all very small, some of the pieces are only about 5 inches wide.
The owner wanted girls, demons and snakes! other than that it was up to me to fill them up so here's what I come up with when given this much freedom.

These two top pieces are placed between the windshield and the side window, there is some more detail on the side of each piece but it turns so I couldn't get a good shot of all the artwork in one photo. Plus there's all kinds of crazy angles, the pieces were taken off the car for me to paint them, and I still haven't seen what they look like installed.

These Bottom three pictures are the biggest pieces, they are about two feet wide, and after working on the other smaller pieces actually felt good to have a bigger area to paint. All the snakes took a long time to paint, but I was very pleased with the amount of detail I was able to achieve.

Mitsubishi Commercial

This is a Portrait I just finished for a Mitsubishi comercial. I had to finish it in two days, which meant I had to pull an all nighter, and still barely finished it on time. The reason I had to do it so fast is because they called me only four days before the shoot was to take place, and between the price agreements and figuring out what I would paint on it, I was left with two days to work on it.

The shoot was supposed to be this morning, hopefully everything turned out great. My friend RETNA got me this job. so I wanted to do a good job, eventhough he told me the portrait is supposed to be on the background and it wasn't really necessary to do full detail, once I got started I got all into it.

Whenever I do a portrait, I usually start off with the face... sometimes it doesn't come out right on the first try because any little alteration on the features changes the face a lot, so when this happens, instead of trying to fix it I just start over and if the face is the only thing I have painted then it won't be so bad. Most times I get it right on the first try though, which was the case on this portrait.
The portrait is supposed to be a guy sitting in a throne holding some kind of lance and baton. I got a really good photo reference of the guy, however, I had to search for a photo of a throne. The first thing I do is project the image onto the canvas, I paint with transparent paints so I try to use light colored pencils because the pencil lines show through and are very hard to cover.
Once I'm satisfied with the face it doesn't really matter what I do next, so I start painting the inside of the robe using first a base of orange followed by a crimson red, and giving it a silky look I then start painting the pants and tennis shoes.
I really liked how the pants stand out from the red, I think the red makes the blue stand out and give it a 3D look.

Here I am pretty close to being finished. So far I've worked on it about 16 hours with only a 5 hour break in between to get some sleep, so I am very tired by now. I couldn't find a good reference for the throne, so I just made up some armrests, trying to make it look good.

Next are a couple of close-up shots once the painting was finished and a full shot of the painting. I really liked the way this turned out, especially the way the dark background makes the guy stand out.

Well this time it was off to Miami Beach where I ended up. I was working on a movie for a couple of weeks there, so here are a few pictures of the trip. I gotta say the people I met there were great!, I had a blast drinking and hanging out... gettin' kicked out of clubs! and eventhough I went there to work, it felt like a vacation.

New Step by Step (Work in Progress)

Finally some new Artwork! after a long time of doing nothing... Ha, ha! Actually, I've been working on a few diferent designs for T-shirts, some new paintings as well as some cool Digital Pieces, and some new drawings of Aztec Warriors for a Coloring book that I've been working on for the last couple of years. I haven't uploaded any of them because I haven't had a lot of spare time to do so. But for now, here's a step by step process of a painting I started last week.
This Painting is done on a 4' x 3' piece of sheet metal that I've had for a long time sitting in my studio, I almost gave it away to a friend of mine but he never came to pick it up, so I decided to finally use it . It's only finished half way by the time of this post, but I'll update the photos as I finish it.

Step 1: For the first step I had to decide what to paint, I really had no idea of what I wanted to do, I liked the metal piece because of the size, and I figured I would paint a girl since I happen to like painting girls, other than that I was drawing a blank. So, I drew a girl with the arms extended and a veil, and had the idea of the wings on the background, which then turned into a bird, as if she's imagining to fly. As you can see this is a very rough drawing, I just wanted to see how it felt on the rectangle.Step 2: For this step I cleaned up the first rough but not too much... I don't like spending a lot of time working on the details if I'm not sure this is the idea that I choose to paint. I decided to add some flowers and hummingbirds instead of the veil. I think it works better.
Step 3: For this drawing after I did some research for birds and flowers I decided I had worked enough on the sketch so I projected it on the metal piece and started painting.
Step 4: When I started painting I wanted to keep the color in a monotone hot pink, but when I started to get some detail and saw what it looked like, I thought it would be a good idea to throw some turqoise blue on the wings, it doesn't show yet on the photos, but I'll be working on those tonight. Here I am doing the detail on a Hummingbird.
Step 5: More flowers...
Step 6: This is what the painting looked like at 11pm Monday. So far I am very satisfied by how it's coming along. I wanted to work on the flowers first because they have so much detail, the girl shouldn't take me long, especially because it has no skin tones.
Step 7: On this step I finished the bottom part with all the flowers, and the birds, I also decided to put a veil on the torso to make her a little more suggestive.

Sepulveda's Latest Creation

Hey everybody!, well it's been a long time since I don't post anything but in the last couple of months I worked on some concept illustrations for a movie, I squeezed in a trip to Mexico (Again!!) and this last weekend I worked on a back piece for a tattoo.

On this top photo you can see the sketch for the tattoo, it says Tinajero and it is the customer's last name surrounded by some creepy skulls, and demons.

And on the next ones you see the progress of the tattoo, it took me about twelve hours to finish it, and I worked on it friday and saturday mostly, sunday I finished up the details.

I didn't even get to finish my painting, but a fan bought it from me before the show ended, this is as far as I got done with it... not even halfway done but they didn't mind, they wanted a Sepulveda Original; The good thing is I thought of taking a picture with it before they left.
I had a lot of fun at this show, most artists from the Latin Airbrush Association participated and displayed their Artwork, as well as a lot of cars with some amazing murals and graphics.

V. Sepulveda's Latest Tattoo

This is a Tattoo that I have been working on for the last three years; It's a whole back piece and it goes up to the shoulders.
I don't get to do a lot of tattoos because a lot of people don't even know I do them, when I do tattoos I want to do collages of my own original Artwork.
I started doing tattoos about eight years ago, and this is my latest one. It was done last week, the bottom part, that is, with the skull made out of smoke. I did the section on this first top photo last year.

Victor Sepulveda's Trip to Mexico.

Here are a few more photos of my trip to Mexico last year. I visited about 40 different cities in a period of four months, all of the photos on this post were taken in November and December 2005.

The first picture is inside the Palacio Nacional en el Zocalo, inside there are about twenty beautiful murals by Diego Rivera depicting Mexico as it was before the Spanish Conquest as well as a pictorial history of life before, during and after the conquest. From there we visited the section of the Palace where Benito Juarez used to live, they still have the furniture exactly how it used to look in 1872.

Thats me in the center of the picture in front of the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico city; Inside there are murals by Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Jorge Gonzalez Camarena as well as other Artists, this was one of the most beautiful buildings I saw, I could have spent hours just looking at all the Artwork.

Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca; Known for its great waves by surfers everywhere. I took a thirteen hour Bus ride from Texcoco with my Cousin, who was working as a Teacher at the Universidad del Mar. Here we met a lot of people, and none of the were Mexican! This was Early November 2005.

Victor Sepulveda doing a live demo in Coyoacan; every sunday you can find many artists painting here and interacting with the public there are lots of booths selling souvenirs and crafts also.

This Picture was taken in the City of Huexotla in a building next to the main Church there. The city is located a short distance from Texcoco, Mexico; around this same time I went to Coyoacan to paint live at the plaza on sunday.

Here I am doing a live demo for the students in Saltillo, Coahuila where I was hired to teach a course on Airbrushing this was at the end of November 2005 I stayed there for one week.

Sepulveda ALSA Logo.

I recently started using ALSA Corp. paints and thought I would do my version of their logo using nothing but their paints; I was invited to participate on the company's first Pinstripe & Car Show this May 21st 2006 doing a Live Airbrushing Demo. This is a step by step process of my technique with Automotive Airbrushing, the painting is done on an 18" x 24" piece of sheet metal that was prepared at their spray booth; they painted it with a Blue Emerald color that changes depending on the angle you are viewing it from blue to green, then they sprayed a coat of urethane clear so it would be ready for me to Airbrush.
First I sanded the piece with a 1200 grit sandpaper which is very fine, this is only to scuff the surface and allow adherence from the paints that have been prepared to be used with the Airbrush.

↖ Next I project the image I had previously sketched on a piece of paper onto the sheet metal; Using a light colored pencil I draw the image. Once the drawing is visible I proceed to paint; In this case the background color is dark so I begin by laying the foundation using a white basecolor and using the background as the shadows and dark areas of the image. It's hard to see on the photo, but for the spray gun I used a color called "Mirra Chrome" which is like a metallic silver with a very fine pigment so you could do fine detail; I used it to make it stand out from the white basecolor.

➚ Here you can see I'm almost done with the White foundation, I used a light tan color for the face and hand but I still let the background show through to represent the shadows and dark areas. Most of my work is done freehand, I like the soft edge look that you get by working like this but mainly I do it because I don't like cutting stencils, plus I change my mind constantly as I'm working on a painting so I wouldn't want to spend time on a stencil and then not use it, there's more freedom if you freehand all your work.

On this next step you can see how I start detailing the image; I start shading from light to dark so I'm constantly changing colors and I always do a section at a time, for the skin color I use three different shades of brown plus orange or yellow depending on the skin color I'm trying to achieve. The white paint leaves more overspray than the black paint so I always try to finish the detail with black to cut the edges and give it a more clean and sharp look.

I painted the guy holding the spraygun first trying to leave the area of the logo clean, but I didn't have to be too careful because the logo is in the foreground and it will be taped off but first I need to finish the image and the background effects.
So far I like the paints, they have very good line and flow control; Also you can mix the colors on the bottle to make your own colors or tones. I am very picky when it comes to paints because I use very thin mixtures to get the smallest details and so far they are working really good; Over the years I have tried many different brands but I am hardly satisfied with the results.

On this step I decided to do some graphics on the background so the design wouldn't look so simple, especially because the triangle of the logo left two big open spaces on the left and right of the design. I cut out a couple of stencils of a motorcycle and a spraygun and a couple of overlapping lines; I painted these using a turquoise blue very lightly so they wouldn't stand out too much.

Now the image is starting to look finished, I am very pleased how the background graphics look finished. Here I am painting the logo and letters, first I taped off the triangle shape and I cut out each of the letters to spray them with white. It is a very simple step because there is no shading or detail but you have to cut out the letters, and make sure there are no gaps where the paint could overspray.

I decided to do a complimentary outline using orange on the guy holding the spraygun, the purpose of this is to make it stand out a little more against the big white shape of the Logo and the blue/green background. Next I make sure the signature is visible, and do any finishing touches before I can say it is finished. I hope they like it at ALSA Corp. I had a lot of fun working on this piece.

Now the Painting is finally finished. the only thing left is to shoot a clearcoat to bring out the vibrancy of the colors as well as the sparkles and pearls; And to give it that wet shiny look to be displayed. I'd like to hear any comments or questions about the piece. www.victorsepulveda.com

Each one of us broght a piece of our most recent Artwork to have displayed for the day, we had food, beers and a great time; Like we always do.

That's right, Victor Sepulveda is now appearing on Lowrider Arte Magazine's issue of Feb-March 2006; Photographed last year at the Crewest Gallery Exhibit: "Boyz n the Hood" August 2005, You can read the article on the magazine or you can visit Lowrider Arte's page to check out more photos of the whole exhibit. On this photo I'm standing in front of one of the three Hoods I painted for the show. The Hoods were all salvaged and were painted at the 2005 Orange County Fair.

Sepulveda's Trip to Pachuca, MEJICO!!

I went to Pachuca, Hidalgo last November to teach an intensive Digital Illustration course at the University of CENHIES; I was only there for six days, but I had a Blast!, the students were great, they loved the course, and they actually were really good learning what I taught; We even partied together and I got to meet a lot of great places around the area.

I took this first photograph in downtown Pachuca the first day I was there, it's supposed to be a version of Big Ben in London, from what I learned the state of Higalgo's history has some English heritage that dates back to the days it was founded. Later on in the night I also got to visit some of the nightclubs there and I have to say, the girls are very friendly there!

Here I am at the computer lab where I was teaching the course. Yup, that's me in the middle being all serious and professional; As you can see, all of the students were very interested in learning and this was "not" propped up for the photo. Actually all the students were second and third year graphic design students, so they were very proficient in Photoshop and Illustrator , which made the course a lot easier for them, and to me because I didn't have to go over the basics of the programs.

The course was an intensive five days, four hours a day, and this on top of the classes the students were taking during the day so I have to congratulate them for making the sacrifice.
Something I was not expecting was the certificate we all got, me for teaching the course, and the students for finishing it.

One of the students happened to have his camera ready, so he took pictures of each of the students getting their own certificate, I only posted three of them though, or this would be a very big post if I put a photo of each one!, and besides, the pics below of the after graduation ceremony are a lot better!.

This is what happens when you get too exited about graduating from an intensive 20 hours in one week on top of regular classes course on Digital Illustration with Victor Sepulveda.
After the Certificate ceremony, we all got together to celebrate the end of the course, at first we had some Tacos de Asada with Guacamole, but after getting our fill, we moved on to the "beverages" .
Which comes to show the benefits of being the Teacher, look at the size of my bottle!, it's a "Sol Brava" and that thing has a kick! I had never heard of it, so the guys brought me a couple to "taste", and this on top of what I had been drinking before, so as you can see on the last pic, we ended up very "Happy".

And here we are close to the end of our little celebration, these kids were great to hang around with, and eventhough I was only there for a few days I had an amazing time with them, I still keep in contact with some of them through the internet, and I've seen a couple of projects they've done using the techniques I showed them.

Real Del Monte
My cousin Osvaldo picked me up from Pachuca on a Saturday morning to take me on a road trip all day, we visited Real del Monte, Mineral del Chico, Omitlan, and a couple of other little towns that I don't remember the names; At the end of the day we drove back to Texcoco, which is only about an hour and a half from Pachuca.

This photo is a little town on the top of a hill, it is called Real del Monte, and it is located about half an hour from Pachuca. We had Breakfast there and walked around for a bit. Afterwards we drove to a couple of towns close by.

Omitlan
That little town down there is called Omitlan, Hidalgo. we stopped on the side of the road on a lookout point to take this photo and then drove dowh through the town. We drove through the little town and it was so quiet I think we encountered about four other cars. We did not plan to go there but from Real del Monte, we were supposed to go uphill to Mineral del Chico, instead we headed downhill and ended up in Omitlan, which was not time wasted... we were on a road trip after all.

This is at the top of the mountain in Mineral del Chico, it's a little town well hidden in the mountains and very cold. I love the picture of the left because of the winding road surrounded by trees, and more trees! and when we got to the top, we could appreciate the whole view, with no buildings anywhere near.

Here is the end of the trip, well, the Pachuca trip at least, I still traveled about two more months through the country afterwards, but I didn't go back to Pachuca. This is a picture I took from the Highway on our way to Texcoco, Mexico; That in the center is: La Piramide del Sol, the Sun Pyramid in Teotihuacan and on the right of it, La Piramide de la Luna.

I can't talk about what the movie is because I'm under a confidentiality agreement; I can't even show any pictures of what it is that I'm doing there, but I can say that the movie is gonna have guns, girls and blood!

Lowrider Art Show

Last year at the Las Vegas Super Show; Lowrider Arte Magazine had it's first Art Exhibit featuring the Artwork of over 30 different artists, Including Gerald Mendez, Fonzy, Jose Lopez and Victor Sepulveda; I was invited to go to the show but I couldn't make it because I was In Mexico teaching a course on Digital Illustration In Pachuca, But I really wanted to go because some of my posters were displayed along with two pairs of tennis shoes I painted for Pony; shown here in the pictures below. I have gotten a few e-mails and calls about these tennis shoes from people who want to know where or how to get them, these are the only two pairs that were painted by me, I painted them as a proposal for Pony to see if they wanted to merchandise them with my artwork but I haven't heard anything from them, and I'm not planning on painting them for individuals because I had a very hard time painting these.

I also appear on the Lowrider Arte Magazine issue of Feb/Mar 2006 on the article for the "Boyz on the Hood" Art Exhibit that took place at Crewest Gallery last year.

AIRBRUSH BASICS by Victor Sepulveda

I get a lot of emails from people who are interested in Airbrushing but have no idea how to get started, so I thought I'd write this post to answer some of those questions; This is a very simple explanation that tells you the basics, there is so much information on Airbrushing I could write a book about it, but for now I'll keep it simple.
The first thing I would recommend is finding out what type of Airbrushing Technique you will be doing; There are many Airbrushes out there, and although you can use any Airbrush for any type or technique (T-shirts, Automobile, Illustration) some are more appropiate for certain techniques, so you have to decide or have an idea of what it is you will be Airbrushing.
AIR SUPPLY
Another important item is the air supply, will you be using a CO2 tank or a compressor?, and if you will be using a compressor, is it an industrial compressor, or a silent compressor?; The CO2 tank is the quietest of all, it makes no noise because is filled with compressed air but you have to keep refilling it every time it goes empty, you can chose two different sizes: 20 lbs. or 50 lbs the bigger one lasts a lot longer, but is not as easy to carry around when you have to fill it.
Silent compressors are great to work with because they don't make a lot of noise, but are more expensive than regular compressors, so if you don't mind the noise and are on a budget you might be better off with a regular compressor.
PAINTS
There are a lot of different types of paints, some of them are already mixed to be used on the Airbrush, and some are not, there are Textile Paints for T-shirts, Urethanes for Automobile Airbrushing, Acrylics for Illustration on board or canvas; These different types of paint have different thickness and diffenent size pigments so you have to learn how to use them and at what air pressure each one works best; Also if they are not pre-mixed you have to learn how to mix them so you can Airbrush with them.

When you have an idea of what it is that you want regarding materials, then you can start by trying out the Airbrush to do some Artwork, most people have a hard time learning how to control the trigger so you can control the flow of the paint, and the thickness of the line; The pressure of the air is very important as well as what type of paints you'll be using; but when you do figure it out and feel comfortable with what you will be working with, then the only thing left is practice, and then more practice, and after that more practice.
Once you are familiar with the Airbrush and how it works, you would have to start focusing on what it is you want to Airbrush, if you want to paint motorcycles then you have to learn how to prepare the surface where you will be Airbrushing, figure out which paints to use, and how to prepare them, also how to protect the Artwork once it is finished; Some techniques are more elaborate than others, for example to Airbrush on a T-shirt all you have to do is place the shirt over a flat board to have it flat and Paint on it your image, and when you finish just heat press it for the Artwork to last longer. On Automobile Airbrushing however, you have to sand the surface you will be painting, and this has to be done after the paint job is finished (unless you have experience with body work and paint) then you Airbrush the Artwork and then have to shoot a Clear Coat to protect it. or have someone else do it.

Well I think I covered the basics, I don't know exactly what kind of experience you may have on your own Artwork, but the Airbrush is just another tool that you have to learn how to apply to your own skills and experience. Old Sepulveda Artwork Found

I was doing a search for my name on the Internet today, as I often do just to see where my Artwork might show up, and to see if anyone is using any of my images without my knowledge, when I ran accross these pictures of an old mural I painted about six years ago for "Lethal 79 Tattoo Shop on Whittier Blvd. in East L.A. I didn't even take any good pictures of it back when I painted it, which actually made me glad I found them on the BrownPride.com website. I wrote to the photographer to ask him to put my name on them, I hope he updates the info on it.

When I painted this mural, I was going to school for Graphic Design at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College LATTC, and I remember I was having a rough time with money, I painted the mural for a classmate who had just opened the shop, but I didn't get paid a lot and I wasn't too happy with the Artwork when I finished it, but now that I look at it after so long, it looks ok to me, not my best work but it works, and I actually noticed on the website that it has gotten very good reviews.

Victor Sepulveda at DUB Magazine Concert&CarShow

I went to the DUB Magazine Concert & CarShow this past February 18th as part of the Crewest booth along with Asylm, Patrick Martinez, Spurn and me to paint live and promote the new Gallery opening. Manny Rivera from Streetwise Clothing took the photographs during the day event.
The event was from noon to 6pm, so this was a rather quick painting, It usually takes me a lot longer but I was quite satisfied with the finished result; the girl in the painting is a friend of mine.

Crewest Downtown Grand Opening.

This last Saturday, March 11th was the Grand opening of Crewest Store and Gallery at their new location in Downtown L.A. where two of my paintings are being exhibited now.
The opening was great, a lot of people showed up throughout the day, I got to see friends from last exhibits, as well as new people from the area who had never heard of Crewest but just from seeing the great artwork were very exited about the show. There was a lot of great comments about the new place, especially that it's a lot bigger from the last one, the artwork looks great on the high walls and hopefully being in the artist district will bring a new crowd. Grammy Car

This is a Cadillac SRX I was hired to paint live at the L.A. Art Show at the Santa Monica Airport from January 25 -29th. It was kind of sudden, because I had barely returned from a trip to Mexico. I got a call on the 25th early in the morning and by four o clock in the afternoon I was already setting up my paints to get started on it. The only info I got over the phone when talking to the people in charge was that they wanted the theme to be of the Grammy's and that it would be a live demo, they gave me the model of the car I was to paint, and that was basically it. Although it has been a month and a half since I painted this, I hadn't had a chance to upload the images on my website, so I figured I would do it here.

Here is a picture of the basic layout, when I got to the place where I would be working, they gave a poster for the upcoming Grammy show, and asked me if I could replicate it on the car, to which I answered yes, but of course in my own style. So I copied some of the musicians, and painted the trophy reallly big, and added the music notes and simbols. I did a quick search for grammy photos before I left my house, which helped me out a lot when I got there.

I start off by painting the image in whites, this is because I use Kandy Concentrate colors, and they are transparent, so the color by itself would not show on a dark color background like this one. For the dark areas and shadows of the image, I let the color of the background to show through, another reason I prefer to work like this is because some paint jobs have metallic paints or flakes that look better if it shows through the airbrush work as oppposed to just covering it up.

Here I am painting on the side of the Cadillac, the only thing I didn't like about this project was that it was cold and windy in Santa Monica, even with the sun out! I think it was as low as 60 degrees! I almost froze my ass off.(Ha, ha, ha notice the glove on left hand)
The good thing about it is that I got to talk to a lot of people I don't usually come in contact with, and I'm pretty sure most of them had never seen someone painting on the side of a car. I know this because of the comments I heard, I was surprised how many people thought I was doing graffitti on the side of a nice car!, but then they would come closer and be surprised at the detail. And I would tell them that I wish I knew how to do graffitti, they get paid more than me.

Well, this is the right side of the car, I basically kept the same layout with the trophy on the center, and a musician next to it, but I painted a girl as if she was a presenter with the trophy. I'm not sure what they did with the car, they had mentioned to me as I was working on it that they were gonna take it to the Grammy Award Celebration but they never told me what it would be used for.

Hey everybody, well now I have my own personal Blog where I will be posting some of my most recent paintings as I work on them, I will also have a chance to post work in progress here, sketches and finished pieces before I get to upload them to my website.

VILLA DESIGN
This is a Design for a T-shirt I'm working on for Chicano Style Clothing as you can see it is not finished yet, I will try to finish it by sunday. It is done with Photoshop over a black and white photo, which is very blurry so it makes it a little harder, but hopefully they will like it.
